Work continues on 20th Street Trafficway

City begins third year of a 5-year plan

City of Leavenworth Public Information Office – July 20, 2017

Construction began this week on 20th Street Trafficway, the third year in a 5-year plan to repair a major roadway.

City engineers identified structural weaknesses that required extensive repair, particularly in concrete joints. Without major repairs, engineers say damage could cost the city a major reconstruction project in the near future. The five year plan focuses on protecting the existing concrete, roadway and subgrade.

“Unfortunately, the materials used for the construction of 20th Street Trafficway in the 1990s have not held up as expected,” said Paul Kramer, City Manager. “It’s disappointing to need road funding for a 20-year-old street, but if we don’t do this now, we will be facing rapid deterioration and the eventual total reconstruction of a four-lane concrete street.”

Each year of the five-year plan is designed to improve a new section of the roadway.

Improvements in 2017 include:

  • Removal and replacement of curb at the intersection of 20th & Vilas.
  • Scraping off, known as milling, the top portion of the asphalt and replacing it with a new asphalt overlay.
  • Upgrading the traffic signals at 20th and Vilas
  • Remove and replace the curb south of Limit Street to Estates Drive
