Sanitary Sewer Overflow reported April 12 at 11th and Cherokee

On April 12 at 8:30 a.m., a contractor working for the City of Leavenworth notified the City of a  broken private lateral sewer line near 1107 Cherokee. Testing using dye in the pipe showed sewage was leaking into the creek  near 11th and Cherokee.

 ACTION TAKEN: Approximately 12 gallons of water were flushed into the creek. Residents near 11th and Cherokee were asked to refrain from using the sewers until repairs could be made. The City and contractor repaired the damaged lateral had stopped the leak by 11:15 a.m.

 RISK TO PUBLIC: Members of the public should avoid the creek in areas of contamination. This area has already been closed to the public because of ongoing construction.

 FURTHER ACTION TAKEN: The City reported the sewer leak to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
